A student of Motijheel Ideal School was killed by a dustcart of Dhaka South City Corporation in a road accident at Mugda Borobazar in the capital Dhaka on Thursday night.
The deceased Md Mahin Ahmed, 13, son of Masum Ahmed of Kishoreganj’s Bajitpur upazila, was a class VII student of the school and used to live with his family in the Mugda area.
The victim’s elder brother, Mahfuz Ahmed, said that Mahin went out of the house to meet a friend on Thursday night.
The DSCC vehicle crashed into him while he was walking on Mugda road at about 9:30pm, leaving  him critically injured, he said.
He was first rushed to Mugda General Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, said DMCH police outpost in-charge Md Bachhu Mia.
‘He died while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College One-stop Emergency Centre at about 10:45pm,’ said Bachhu.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel division deputy commissioner Hayatul Islam Khan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had arrested the driver of the dustcart while a case was filed in connection with the Mugdha police station.Â
‘We produced him before the court, and the court sent him to jail. We cannot say anything more right now before completing the investigation,’ the DC said.Â
After visiting the victim’s house, Dhaka South City mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh told reporters that the dustcart was being driven by another person instead of the designated driver.
‘We will not tolerate this kind of irregularity. We will take stern administrative action,’ he said.
He added that the DSCC would take stern action against the person involved in this incident.
The victim was buried at Khilgaon graveyard following a namaz-e-janaza at a mosque in Mughda.
Mahin’s father, Masum Ahmed, works in a clothing factory.
Dustcart continues to kill people as the authorities concerned have failed to take any significant steps amid repeated occurrences.Â
On November 24, 2021, a Notre Dame College student, Nayeem Hasan, was killed by a DSCC dustcart at Gulistan Zero Point, sparking road safety protests by hundreds of students from different educational institutions that continued for two days.
On the second day of that protest, students blocked the DSCC main gate. Students ended their protests following the assurance of Dhaka South City mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh about ensuring justice and taking steps to prevent such incidents.
With Mahin, at least nine people have lost their lives in accidents involving city corporation dustcarts since April 2021.
