The prices of vegetables, broiler chicken and eggs decreased on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka over the week ending Friday due to an improved supply situation and a halt in extortion on highways and at markets, according to traders.

The prices of most essential commodities increased excessively in the past two weeks as unrest over quota-reform movement, which ultimately led to prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and fall of the government on August 5, disrupted supply chains.

Traders said that the prices of commodities, mainly vegetables, eggs and broiler chicken, decreased due to the improved supply chain.

They also said that the prices of vegetables witnessed a significant decrease on the market due to low prices on growers’ level and a halt in extortion on highways and at markets after the change of the government in the country.

However, they noted, a new group of individuals has already begun pressuring traders at several kitchen markets for money extortion.
