A Dhaka court on Tuesday exempted commerce adviser Sheikh Bashir Ahmed in a case filed against 57 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, on charges of killing Md Sohan Shah, an executive mechanical engineer of Virgo Garments.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam issued the order discharging Sheikh Bashir Uddin from the case, as the court found no evidence of his involvement in the incident.
Earlier, on November 24, RAB-3 sub-inspector Md Mostafizur Rahman, also the investigating officer of the case, submitted an interim report to the court in the case.
The investigating officer stated in the report that no involvement of the accused, Sheikh Bashir Uddin, was found in the incident, and the IO also requested his discharge from the case.
Mia Mohammad Ashish bin Hasan, deputy commissioner of the Prosecution Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said the investigating officer submitted an interim report to the court seeking his discharge, as he did not find involvement of the accused, and the court accepted the report.
Sheikh Bashir Uddin, chief of Akij Bashir Group, took oath as an adviser to the interim government in November 2024, three months after the formation of the interim administration.
Shortly afterward, the fact that he had been named as an accused in a case filed at Rampura Police Station during the July movement resurfaced in public discussion.
During the July mass uprising, on July 19 last year, Sohan Shah (30) was shot and injured in front of a CNG station in Rampura. He died on August 28 that year while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Later, on September 19, Sohan鈥檚 mother, Sufia Begum, filed a murder case in a Dhaka court accusing 57 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina.
Sheikh Bashir Uddin was listed as the 49th accused in the Sohan murder case, and he was identified as an Awami League leader in the case.
