Leaders of International Farakka Committee on Monday at a press briefing in Dhaka called on all the political parties taking part in the next general election in early February in Bangladesh to include water issues in the election manifesto.
The New York based International Farakka Committee and the IFC committee Dhaka organised the press briefing in a city restaurant where the chairman of IFC, Sayed Tipu Sultan, said that getting a justified amount of water from India was an important for Bangladesh.
‘Of the total 54 common rivers flowing between India and Bangladesh, we, as a lower basin state, have been deprived of a justified amount of water,’ Tipu Sultan said, adding that securing a justified share of the Teesta river water was important for Bangladesh, but the issue has not been resolved yet.
Mostafa Kamal Majumder, president of IFC, Bangladesh, said they had also taken initiatives to convince the political parties to include the water issues in their election manifestos and the parties could also launch movements to demand a justified amount of water from the common rivers flowing between Bangladesh and India.
