Clashes between the Sardarpara and Vangabari neighbourhoods in Sirajganj continued for the third straight day on Sunday, heightening panic and disrupting daily life across the district town.

The violence began on Friday after a youth from Sardarpara was assaulted at Muktijoddha Sangsad Road.

The situation quickly escalated into brick-throwing and stick clashes that stretched from the Sadar Thana intersection to Passport Office Road and locals also reported hearing several explosive sounds.

Fresh clashes broke out again on Saturday morning at Passport Office Road and soon spread to Abdul Mannan Road, turning the area into a battlefield for nearly four hours.

Police reinforcements, led by senior district officials, were deployed but struggled to control the situation.

Tensions flared again at about 11:00am on Sunday, engulfing the same areas during office hours and public examinations.

More than 50 people were injured over the three days and were being treated at Shaheed M Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital and several private clinics.

Fearing further unrest, residents of Sardarpara, Vangabari, Chirar Mill, Thana Road and adjoining areas remained indoors.

Mokhlesur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar police, said that additional forces, including army personnel, were deployed on Sunday to stabilise the situation.

‘We are continuously on the ground to stop the clashes,’ he said.

Repeated attempts to contact Sirajganj superintendent of police Md Faruk Hossain were unsuccessful.
