No case has been filed yet after three days since the death of van driver Shahidul Islam Mukul in the custody of the Detective Branch of police in Sirajganj.

Rumours have surfaced that a settlement or compromise has taken place between the victim’s family and the accused police officers.

The probe committee formed by the office of the Superintendent of Police has reportedly begun its investigation on Sunday into the alleged torture by the Sirajganj DB police.

Mukul was first arrested by Ullapara police on Thursday as a suspect in a murder incident. He was later handed over to the DB, where he was interrogated for around 14–15 hours.

During the interrogation, he allegedly became critically ill due to severe beatings.

Family members claimed that DB officers demanded Tk 5 lakh in exchange for releasing Mukul. When the family failed to pay the money, he was subjected to further assault.

The police admitted him to Sirajganj General Hospital claiming him to be a victim of ‘public assault’. He died soon after the admission at around 3:30pm on Friday.

Emergency department physician Hemadri Shekhar Saha confirmed that there were visible injury marks on his body.

However, additional superintendent of police (administration) Mahbubur Rahman claimed that Mukul had been suffering from breathing difficulties.

On Sunday evening, SP Faruk Hossain told this reporter, ‘The investigation team formed by the district police has already begun its work. Necessary action will be taken once the report is received.’

Meanwhile, some residents of the victim’s village, Kalia Haripur of Sirajganj Sadar, seeking anonymity alleged that a ‘settlement’ had been reached between the accused officers and the victim’s family, which is why they are no longer showing interest in filing a case.

The victim’s elder brother, Jahurul Islam, said, ‘We brought my brother’s body home after the autopsy and completed the funeral. Today we fed some guests. Maybe tomorrow my nephews and I will sit together and decide on the legal steps. If necessary, we will contact the police station and the media.’

On November 12, police recovered the body of rickshaw driver Aminul Islam from beneath the Chaukidah Bridge beside the Dhaka–Nagarbari–Pabna highway in Ullapara, Sirajganj.

Van driver Mukul was arrested on Thursday by Ullapara police in this connection and later handed over to the DB for interrogation.
