Bangladesh Medical University vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam at a two-day workshop at the BMU in Dhaka on Sunday said that the importance of procurement activities was essential for the needs and welfare of patients, and for the development of medical education and research.
He made the remarks at the inaugural day of the workshop on Public Procurement Act 2006 and Rules 2025, which was organised under the initiative of the BMU’s Finance and Accounts Office, said a press release.
Attending the event as chief guest, Professor Shahinul Alam said that the procurement activities must be transparent and corruption-free.
‘Rules and regulations have to be followed in the procurement activities, due to which some complications have to be faced,’ he said, mentioning, ‘Many people refrain from procurement activities this time for these reasons. This is absolutely not right.’
He also said that various activities, including purchasing new equipment, repairing old equipment had to be completed. ‘It must be remembered that the procurement will be for the welfare of patients, and the law must also be followed. The law is not made to prevent, but for development.’
Therefore, those who are responsible for purchasing, especially those who are responsible for purchasing activities in various departments of BMU, must take the responsibility of purchasing for the benefit of patients, for the benefit of medical education, and for the development of the department, he mentioned.
Presided over by BMU treasurer Professor Dr Nahrin Akhtar, BMU pro-VC, administration, Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad was present as special guest while BMU finance and accounts director Khandaker Shafiqul Hasan delivered welcome speech at the programme.
Afroza Parveen, director, administration, of the Ministry of Planning, and Mohammad Anwar Hossain, chief instructor of the National Academy for Planning and Development, presented papers as research persons.
40 teachers and officials related to procurement activities of various departments participated in this important workshop.
