The National Board of Revenue has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for individual taxpayers for the 2025–26 tax year by one month, setting 31 December 2025 as the new date.
The decision was announced through a special order issued on November 19.
Additionally, in a separate order, the NBR said that taxpayers who are having trouble registering for the e-return system can ask their local deputy tax commissioners for help by December 15, provided they provide clear and valid reasons for not being able to file online.
Earlier, the NBR made online submission of income tax returns mandatory for all individual taxpayers across the country, except for senior citizens aged 65 years or above, physically incapable, or taxpayers with special needs, subject to submission of certificates, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, foreign nationals working in Bangladesh, and legal representatives of deceased taxpayers.
However, several exempted categories were not required to file online; they might still choose to submit e-returns voluntarily.
According to the NBR, authorised representatives may also file returns online on behalf of taxpayers.
NBR online filing is optional for Bangladeshis living abroad; however, they can register easily by emailing their passport number, NID, email address, and other required information to the NBR through its designated email address.
Upon verification, an OTP and registration link will be sent to the applicant’s email, enabling them to access the e-return system and file online.
Taxpayers can submit returns without uploading any documents by simply entering accurate information on income, expenditure, assets, and liabilities.
NBR also said that payments can be made digitally through debit or credit cards, internet banking, or mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad.
The system would instantly generate the acknowledgement slip and the income tax certificate, making e-return filing popular among taxpayers at home and abroad, the NBR said.
To make the e-return platform more accessible, the NBR has conducted training sessions for taxpayers, as it did last year, and has also provided separate training for authorised representatives, including income tax lawyers, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, and chartered secretaries.
To address e-return-related queries, the state agency also set up a dedicated call centre and email address, as well as e-return help desks at all tax zones across the country, offering in-person assistance during office hours, with taxpayers receiving guidance both in person and over the phone.
The NBR urged all individual taxpayers to use the e-return platform and file their income tax returns for FY2025–26 by December 31.
So far, more than 1.8 million taxpayers have filed their returns online this year.
