Members of Rapid Action Battalion arrested a man accused of killing his wife by setting her on fire after pouring diesel on her at Bagha upazila in Rajshahi.
A joint team of RAB-5, Rajshahi, and RAB-4, Mirpur Camp, arrested Md Suruj, 32, son of Shahidul Majhi of Chak Narayanpur village under Bagha upazila, from Mirpur-12鈥檚 Laldag area under Pallabi police station early Saturday, said RAB-5 in a press release.
According to the release, Suruj married Anannya Khatun Munni, 25, about ten years ago, and the couple had two children but Munni had reportedly been subjected to dowry-related torture throughout the marriage.
Her family paid Tk 1 lakh in 2018 after Suruj demanded Tk 2.5 lakh as dowry, but he allegedly continued to pressure her for the聽rest Tk 1.5 lakh, and subjected her to physical and psychological abuse when she refused.
The press release said that on the evening of October 31, Suruj beat and humiliated Munni again over dowry and at around 3:45am, he allegedly took her to the yard, poured diesel on her and set her on fire.
Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed in, rescued her and took her to hospital, where she died later that afternoon.
After Munni鈥檚 brother filed a murder case with Bagha Police Station, RAB-5 launched a parallel shadow investigation alongside other law enforcement agencies.
Suruj had been on the run since the killing, the release further stated, adding that the arrested man had been handed over to the police.
