Leaders of Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) on Friday at a discussion meeting in Dhaka called on the interim government to take steps for holding next general election in a free, fair and credible manner for democratic transition of the country.
The Socialist Party of Bangladesh organised the meeting in front of the National Press Club to mark the108th anniversary of the Russian Socialist Revolution and the 45th founding anniversary of the party, where party coordinator Masud Rana presided over.
Masud Rana said that the people of the country were eagerly waiting for its democratic transition and holding the next general election in February 2026 is essential after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, which faced a student-led people’s uprising on August 5, 2024.
He also added that the interim government headed by Professor Muhammad Yunus in his 15 months’ rule had failed to implement the aspirations of the uprising, and frequent mob violence had tarnished the government’s image, and only by following socialism could a repression and oppression free society be formed, and people could enjoy their democratic rights.Â
Central leader of the party Shafiuddin Kabir Abid reiterated the failure of the government and mentioned that they had leased out two ports to the foreign companies, which was contrary to the national interests of the country. Â
He called on the left and democratic political parties to be united and to wage movements to compel the government to scrap the unequal deals with the foreign companies.
Another central leader Shima Datta said that the interim government had also failed to establish rights of the workers and women in the society.
Central leader Joudip Bhattacharjee conducted the discussion meeting.
Several hundred party leaders and activists from across the country took part in the programmes.
Before the discussion meeting, patriotic songs were performed and a colourful procession with red flags paraded down different city roads.
