A 45-year-old man who was detained by the Detective Branch of the police Thursday night died at Sirajganj General Hospital on Friday while undergoing treatment there under DB custody.
The deceased is Shahadat Hossain, 45, of Kalia Haripur Union under Sadar Upazila in Sirajganj. A team of the Detective Branch of the police detained him from his village Thursday night for his suspected involvement in the killing of an auto-rickshaw driver on November 12.
Sources in the police and hospital officials said that Shahadat fell sick during interrogation Friday afternoon, and the police rushed him to Sirajganj General Hospital.
Hemadri Shekhar Saha, a physician at the hospital’s emergency department, said in the evening that a group of plainclothes police brought Shahadat to the hospital at about 3:30 pm.
‘When he was admitted to the hospital, there were injury marks on the fingers of his hand. When asked, the police told our hospital staff that Shahadat was injured in a mob assault,’ Hemadri said.
He said that Shahadat died despite being provided with emergency medical care.
‘It is suspected that there might have been internal bleeding. Fear from physical assault could also have led to his cardiac arrest. The exact cause will be known after the autopsy,’ Hemadri said.
The Sirajganj additional superintendent of police (crime), Md Mahbubur Rahman, claimed that the Detective Branch of the police detained Shahadat for his suspected involvement in the murder of Aminul Islam, an auto-rickshaw driver.
On November 12, Aminul’s body was found abandoned beneath the Chowkidah Bridge beside the Bogura–Pabna Highway in Ullapara.
‘He might have had prior breathing problems and suddenly fell ill during interrogation. He might have died due to breathing complications,’ Mahbubur claimed.
