Villagers at Bordeshi West and Bordeshi East under Aminbazar union of Savar Upazila, on the outskirts of the capital, have been facing suspension of gas supply for the past 3 months due to a leakage in the pipeline on the Dhaka–Aricha Highway.

Many households have resorted to costly liquefied petroleum gas and others have opted for wood-burning stoves to cook food items as Titas Gas, the state-owned company, fails to address the problems.

Titas Gas officials said that a leakage developed on its pipeline at a point on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in August.

The gas supply has remained suspended since then as the leakage causes fire, said Titas officials, adding that it caused problems for domestic consumers and commercial consumers like compressed natural gas station in the Aminbazar area.

Taifur Rahman, the manager at Darus Salam office under the Titas’ Metro Dhaka Sales Division-6, said that they had sought permission from the Roads and Highways Department to mend the pipeline.

The permission is needed to suspend vehicular movement as the damaged line runs through the highway, he said, and added that they were yet to get the permission.

Titas Gas officials said that the RHD had been delaying giving permission, as the suspension of vehicular movement on the highway is very sensitive.

The Dhaka-Aricha highway, with a daily traffic volume of around 25,000 vehicles, connects the capital city, Dhaka, to around 28 northwestern and western districts, facilitating a significant amount of passenger and cargo traffic.
