Two infants drowned in a pond at Paschim Para of Srirampur village under Raikot Uttar Union in Nangalkot upazila of Cumilla Thursday afternoon.
The deceased are 21 months old Sadia Akhter, daughter of Md Ahsan and 22 months old Arian Hossain, son of Ahsan鈥檚 brother Salauddin. Both the dead children鈥檚 fathers are expatriates in Oman.
According to local residents, the children were playing in the courtyard at around noon while Arian鈥檚 mother Fahima and Sadia鈥檚 mother Nadia were busy in cooking.
At certain stage, the two cousins were wandering out of the house unnoticed.
Later, a neighbour saw the children floating in a nearby pond and screamed for help.
Locals rushed to the scene, rescued the children and took them to Chauddagram upazila health complex, where on-duty doctors declared them dead.
Robiul Hasan of the health complex said the children died before they were brought to the hospital.
Chauddagram police station sub-inspector Saidur Rahman said the bodies were handed over to the families after completing necessary formalities.
