The Liberation War Affairs Ministry has cancelled the recognition of 53 more individuals listed as ‘July Fighters’ in a gazette.

According to a Monday notification, signed by the ministry’s deputy secretary Haridash Thakur, all the 53 individuals were from Rangpur division.

Earlier in October, the ministry cancelled the gazetted names of 128 ‘July Fighters’ based on the recommendations of the district committees because some of the listed individuals were not injured in the July Uprising, some were not involved in the uprising, and some names appeared in multiple gazettes.

According to the ministry data, with the new changes, the number of gazetted injured individuals stands at 13,618 who fought in the uprising that led to the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

Earlier, in a notification issued on August 3, the ministry cancelled the recognition of eight individuals listed as ‘July Martyrs’ in a gazette.

The total number of ‘July Martyrs’ announced through the gazette now stands at 836.

The government recognises those injured in the uprising as ‘July Fighters’ and those killed as ‘July Martyrs’. Â
