A former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader was stabbed to death in a factional clash in Babuganj upazila of Barishal on Monday night over distributing sweets to celebrate the death sentence awarded to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Deceased Rabiul Islam, 24, was former vice-president of Jahangirnagar union (under Babuganj upazila) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student front of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Rabiul鈥檚 father Mizanur Rahman, of Agorpur village in the upazila, is an expatriate in Kuwait.

Eight individuals who were also injured in the incident are: Palash, Russell, Sabbir Hasan, Ashraful Haque, Shanto, Emdadul, Riwan and Shakil.

The celebration began after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday handed down death penalty to Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan.

Local people said that the clash broke out after one JCD faction objected, claiming that they were excluded from sweets distribution.

Rabiul, who suffered critical stab injuries, was taken to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Injured JCD activist Shanto said that they brought out a procession distributing sweets following the verdict when a dispute began in front of the local NRBC Bank branch over not inviting all to the celebration.

Jahangirnagar union chairman Kamrul Ahsan Khan Himu said that the incident resulted from infighting within Chhatra Dal.

Palash Chandra Sarkar, Babuganj police investigation officer, said that additional police personnel were deployed to the area and the situation was under control.
