Opposing groups appear to be behind arson and crude bomb attacks on establishments and vehicles at places across the country.
The attacks continued on Tuesday with five incidents occurring overnight in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country after Monday’s International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict sentencing the ousted prime minister and Awami League president, Sheikh Hasina, to death in a case of crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 mass uprising.
Three police members were injured in a series of crude bomb attacks carried out by unidentified people on Kotalipara police station and the upazila parishad in Gopalganj.
Besides, the house of former president Abdul Hamid in Kishoreganj was attacked while miscreants set fire to the house of former Awami League lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari in Feni Monday night.
The Awami League, the activities of which are currently banned, announced through social media on Monday for a ‘complete shutdown’ programme for Tuesday across the country, protesting at the verdict.
However, the presence of the Awami League activists was not seen in any place, while the public also did not respond to their call to enforce the shutdown programme.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday sentenced Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death, while former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun received a reduced sentence of five years for committing atrocities during the July uprising that ousted the AL regime on August 5, 2024.
A series of crude bomb explosions and arson attacks on vehicles, especially buses, have taken place in Dhaka and several other areas since the night of November 7, after the AL had announced programmes on social media centering the verdict.
In Dhaka, a crude bomb exploded in front of the office of public prosecutor Omar Faruk of the Dhaka metropolitan and sessions judge›s court at about 4:15pm on Tuesday, court officials said.
In Magura, unidentified miscreants set fire to a Grameen Bank branch in Mohammadpur upazila at about 3:45am on Tuesday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in the district, quoting Mohammadpur police station officer-in-charge Abdur Rahman, reported.
In Kishoreganj, a group of unidentified people attacked and vandalised former President Abdul Hamid’s house in Mithamoin upazila at about 10:30pm on Monday , the United News of Bangladesh, quoting Mithamoin police station officer-in-charge Alamgir Kabir, reported.
In Feni, a group of protesters set fire to the house of former Awami League lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari in Feni town at about 8:00pm on Monday, UNB reported.
The house was attacked, looted and burnt on August 5, 2024.
In Gopalganj, two crude bombs were hurled at the upazila parishad at about 9:00pm on Monday and another crude bomb was hurled at Kotalipara police station at about 10:30pm, leaving three police members injured, Kotalipara police station’s officer-in-charge Khondaker Hafizur Rahman said.
He said that the police officers received primary treatment at the upazila health complex.
The Detective Branch of police arrested five more Awami League leaders and activists in the past 24 hours till early Tuesday, allegedly for bringing out flash processions to create unrest in the capital.
Since November 7, at least 40 crude bombs have exploded and at least 30 vehicles have been set on fire in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.
