Lawyers in Rajshahi formed a human chain on Monday protesting against the attack on the family of Rajshahi metropolitan sessions judge Md Abdur Rahman, in which his teenage son was killed and wife critically injured.
The Rajshahi Bar Association formed the human chain in front of the bar association building.
Addressing the programme, lawyers expressed outrage over the assault and murder, terming the incident a grave threat to justice and public security.
Ali Ashraf Masum, public prosecutor of Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court, questioned if the family of a member of the judiciary was not safe, how ordinary citizens could expect justice.
He demanded a prompt and impartial investigation and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
The protesting lawyers also criticised the broadcasting of remarks made by the accused while in police custody, calling it ‘highly regrettable and unacceptable.’
Parvez Taufiq Zahedy, former general secretary of the bar association, said that recent comments by law-enforcement officials and the practice of presenting detainees before the press amounted to media trial.
They also announced that no lawyer from the bar association would provide legal assistance to any accused involved in the case.
Among others, bar association president Abul Kashem, general secretary Jamsed Ali, Speedy Trial Tribunal public prosecutor Munshi Abul Kalam Azad and Women and Children Tribunal-1 public prosecutor Shamsad Begum Mitali spoke at the programme.
On November 13, Limon Mia, son of HM Solaiman Shahid of Modonerpara village under Fulchhari upazila in Gaibandha, reportedly entered the judge’s house, stabbed his son to death and injured his wife.
Limon was also injured in the incident and was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where police arrested him.
A day after, judge Abdur Rahman filed a murder case with the Rajpara police station against Limon.
On Saturday, the Metropolitan Magistrate Court placed Limon on a five-day remand.
