India has reaffirmed its commitment to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh following the verdict delivered by the International Crimes Tribunal concerning the deposed Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday.

In a statement issued the same day by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the country said it has noted the verdict announced by the ‘International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh’ concerning Sheikh Hasina.

‘As a close neighbour, India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including in peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country,’ adds the statement.

‘We will always engage constructively with all stakeholders to that end,’ adds the statement.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday sentenced deposed prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death and jailed former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun for five years in a crimes against humanity case linked to the July–August 2024 mass uprising.

The Hasina-led government was ousted on August 5, 2024, after a 36-day uprising that began on July 1.

Hasina fled to India on August 5,2024, Asaduzzaman is believed to be in hiding in India and Mamun is currently in jail.
