Arson and crude bomb attacks continued at places in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country on Sunday amid tight security measures ahead of today’s verdict in the crimes against humanity case against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina for her alleged involvement in atrocities during 2024 July uprising.
On Sunday, unidentified attackers set fire to at least seven vehicles, including an ambulance, and an establishment in Dhaka, Keraniganj, Savar, Sylhet, Kushtia, Mymensingh and Feni.
At least 11 crude bombs exploded in Dhaka and Gazipur on the day. A pedestrian was injured as a crude bomb exploded on New Eskaton Road in the capital in the morning.
The incidents occurred when members of the army, the police and the Border Guard Bangladesh personnel were deployed in Dhaka and surrounding districts to tackle any untoward situation. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has also set up several check posts in the city and has been checking suspicious vehicles and persons on the roads.
A series of crude bomb explosions and arson attacks on vehicles, especially buses, have taken place in Dhaka and several other areas since the night of November 7, after the AL had announced ‘Dhaka Lockdown’ on social media for November 13, the day scheduled for setting the Hasina case verdict date by the International Crimes Tribunal.
Ahead of today’s scheduled verdict, the Awami League again on social media announced to enforce a ‘complete shutdown’ for Sunday and Monday.
Fire Service and Civil Defence control room duty officer, Khaleda Yasmin, said that three parked buses were set on fire at Hazaribagh, Keraniganj and Savar in Dhaka early Sunday. Â
Of them, the bus at Hazaribagh was set on fire at about 12:00 night and a Balaka Paribahan bus was burnt in Keraniganj at about 3:00am, she said and added that a bus of Itihash Paribahan was set on fire at Savar.
In Sylhet, unidentified miscreants torched an ambulance at the parking lot of Shaheed Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital and a bus at Kumargaon bus terminal area in Sylhet early Sunday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in the district reported, referring to officials.
In Kushtia, a truck was set on fire by unidentified miscreants at Aruapara area of sadar upazila in Kushtia early Sunday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in the district reported.
In Mymensing, a covered van was set on fire in the Akua Bypass area of Mymensingh city early Sunday, according to Muhammad Shibirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mymensingh kotwali police station.
Unidentified miscreants set fire to the July Memorial in the Muktabazar area of Feni district at about 3:30am, United News of Bangladesh reported.
In Dhaka, two unidentified miscreants on a motorbike hurled two crude bombs at Kawran Bazar intersection at about 7:30pm on Sudnay, said Kalabagan police station officer-in-charge Moniruzzaman Khan.
Another crude bomb was exploded in front of the Waqf Building on New Eskaton Road in the capital, leaving a pedestrian injured, at about 8:00am.
The injured is identified as Abdul Basir, said Ibne Mizan, deputy commissioner for Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
According to the police, Abdul Basir was going to his office in the Banglamotor area when the crude bomb went off and injured him.
New Market police station officer-in-charge AKM Mahfuzul Haque said that unidentified miscreants hurled two crude bombs near the environment, forest and climate change affairs adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan’s home in the capital’s Central Road area at about 9:00pm. None was injured in the incident.
Unidentified people exploded a crude bomb near the Rojina Oil Pump in the capital’s Gabtoli area at about 9:40pm, while the police recovered two unexploded crude bombs from a shopping bag, said Darussalam police station OC Rokibul Hossen.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s assistant commissioner for Ramna Zone, Mazharul Islam, said that unidentified people exploded a crude bomb in front of the central office of the National Citizen Party at Banglamotor in the capital minutes after 9:00pm on Sunday.Â
Unidentified miscreants on early Sunday hurled at least four ‘molotov cocktails’ and crude bombs at two Grameen Bank branches in Gazipur and Bogura. The bank’s signboards caught fire in the explosions, said police.
Quoting Sreepur police station officer-in-charge Abdul Barek, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Gazipur reported that miscreants targeted the signboard of the bank and exploded a crude bomb and a Molotov cocktail.
Grameen Bank’s another branch in Bogura’s Garidaha union of Sherpur upazila was also targeted as miscreants threw molotov cocktails on the signboard or set fire to it early Sunday, said Sreepur police station officer-in-charge SM Moinuddin.
Meanwhile, the Detective Branch of the police has detained 10 more AL leaders and activists in the past 24 hours till Sunday morning, allegedly for planning and financing flash processions to create unrest in the capital, said a DMP press release on Sunday.
Since November 7, at least 30 crude bombs were exploded and at least 26 vehicles were set on fire in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.
