Hasan Azizul Haque

Today is the fourth anniversary of death of Independence Award-winning fiction writer Hasan Azizul Haque.

Born at Jabgraam in Burdwan district of West Bengal in British India on February 2, 1939, Hasan Azizul Haque completed his higher secondary education from Government BL College in Khulna in 1956.


His first story titled Shakun was published in 1960. His collections of his short stories include ‘Samudrer Swapna Sheeter Aranya’, ‘Atmaja O Ekti Karabi Gachh’, ‘Jiban Ghashe Agun’, ‘Patale Haspatale’, ‘Namhin Gotrahin’, ‘Ma-Meyer Sangsar’, ‘Rarhbanger Galpa’ and ‘Bidhabader Katha O Anynya Galapa’.

Hasan Azizul Haque’s first novel titled Agunpakhi was published in 2006. His other novels and novellas include Sabitri Upakhyan, Shamuk, Brittayan and Sheuly.

He also wrote a number of essays on contemporary social, political and cultural issues. His collections of essays include ‘Kathasahityer Kathakata’, ‘Chalchitrer Khutinati’, ‘Aprakasher Bhar’, ‘Ataler Adhi’, ‘Lokjatra Adhunik Sahitya’, ‘Katha Lekha Katha’, ‘Ekattar: Kartale Chhinnamatha’, ‘Ke Banche Ke Banchay’, ‘Bachanik Atmajaibanik’ and ‘Chintan-Kana’.

Hasan Azizul received almost all major literary awards in the country, including Independence Award, Ekushey Padak and Bangla Academy Award.

Hasan Azizul Haque passed away on November 15, 2021.
