A laboratory technician was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj late on Wednesday, the police said.

The victim, identified as Raton Ahmed, 22, was attacked near the Bhaterchar Bridge area along the Dhaka–Chattogram highway at about 11:00pm, according to police and local residents.


Raton, originally from Bogura, had been living with his family in a rented house in Baraikandi Bhaterchar village.

He had recently joined Baraka Hospital at Madanpur area in Narayanganj, after working several years at Gazaria General Hospital, police said.

Witnesses reported finding him lying in a pool of blood on the roadside with severe injuries believed to have been inflicted by a sharp weapon.

As he was taken to Gazaria General Hospital by the police, doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

‘He had multiple wounds on his hands and body, and appeared to have died from excessive bleeding,’ a hospital source said.

‘They hacked him and looted everything, it was a planned murder,’ the victim’s father, Abdul Jalil said, adding that the family would file a case.

Officer-in-Charge of Gazaria Police Station Md Anwar Alam said police are investigating the incident as a possible murder.

‘We are looking into the motive and those involved,’ he said.

No arrests have been made so far.
