Security at the International Crimes Tribunal has been beefed up as the ICT-1 is scheduled to set a date for delivering its verdict in the crimes against humanity case against Bangladesh’s deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and detained former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
The Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, announced a ‘Dhaka Lockdown’ on social media for the day.
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh, Armed Police Battalion and Dhaka Metropolitan Police were seen alert in front of the High Court gate-adjacent to the tribunal at about 9:30am.
The judges are expected to announce the verdict date between 11:00am and 12:00pm, according to the officials of the tribunal.
Judges and prosecutors remained at their offices, while a senior police officer from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police visited the tribunal registrar’s office.
Around one hundred local and international journalists gathered at the tribunal compound with special passes issued by the DMP.
Armoured vehicles of BGB and DMP were seen stand by while members of Bangladesh Army were seen patrolling the area.
A large number of police have been deployed at different important establishments and on roads in Dhaka on Thursday.
In addition, members of the army, BGB and law enforcement, security and intelligence agencies are also deployed across the city to prevent any sabotage.
Several buses had been torched in Dhaka and other districts on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and early Thursday amid a spate of crude bomb explosions that spread panic among people.
