The High Court on Wednesday directed the Dhaka University’s vice chancellor and the director general of the Department of Environment to take appropriate measures to protect and properly maintain eight playgrounds on the university campus.
The bench of Justice Md Shohrowardi and Justice Dihider Masum Kabir passed the order while announcing the verdict in a public interest litigation filed by the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh in 2012.
The HRPB filed the petition after a newspaper report published on September 24, 2012. The report revealed that DU students were being deprived of playing opportunities as the authorities had been renting out the central playground.
The rights organisation sought a directive to remove construction materials from the central playground and ensure students’ access to it.
Later, in a supplementary plea, HRPB’s president and lawyer Manzill Murshid requested the court to also protect and preserve seven other dormitory playgrounds.
The dormitories are Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, Jagannath Hall, Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, Kabi Jasimuddin Hall, Fazlul Haque Hall, Sir Salimullah Muslim Hall, Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall, and Begum Rokeya Hall.
