Shaheed Noor Hossain Day was observed on Monday recalling his outstanding contributions to the anti-autocracy movement and restoration of democracy in the country.
Different political and socio-cultural organisations organised various programmes in the capital to mark the day.
Leaders and activists of different political parties paid homage to Noor Hossain by placing wreaths at Noor Hossain Square at Zero Point in the capital’s Gulistan area.
Leaders and activists of the Communist Party of Bangladesh, the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, the Ganosamhati Andolan, the Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh and several other organisations paid tribute to Noor Hossain by placing wreaths at the Noor Hossain Square in the morning.
The Left Democratic Alliance also paid tribute to anti-autocracy movement martyrs Noor Hossain, Aminul Huda Tito and others by placing wreaths.
The Nagarik Oikya organised a discussion at the Dhaka Reporters Unity to mark the day.
Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna chaired the discussion.
On this day in 1987, Awami Juba League leader Noor Hossain, who imprinted his bare chest and back with the slogans ‘Free democracy’ and ‘Down with autocracy’, embraced martyrdom in police firing during an anti-autocracy demonstration in the city’s Zero Point area, now known as Shaheed Noor Hossain Square.
The martyrdom of Noor Hossain and others during the mass upsurge of the late 90s expedited the anti-autocracy movement.
In the face of the movement, the then autocratic ruler had to step down on December 6, 1990.
Since then, the day is being observed every year as the Shaheed Noor Hossain Day.
