Students of Dhaka College and Ideal College on Sunday reached an agreement, pledging to put an end to years of campus clashes that often spilled onto Dhaka city streets.

The agreement ceremony took place at Dhaka College on Sunday afternoon, in the presence of teachers and police officials.

More than 200 students from both educational institutions participated, promising to avoid future confrontations.

Students of Dhaka College, Ideal College and Dhaka City College have long been known for their rivalries.

Their disputes often erupt into violent street brawls, causing major traffic disruptions and public distress around New Market and Science Laboratory areas.

To address the issue, New Market police station officer-in-charge AKM Mahfuzul Haque organised a ‘peace agreement ceremony’ between the Dhaka College and Ideal College students.

Mahfuzul said, ‘I took this initiative to stop fighting and encourage friendship. I hope issues will be resolved through discussion in the future.’

Students of Dhaka City College, however, did not participate in the deal signing, saying that they had no conflicts with other colleges, he said.

Mahfuzul also said that a committee comprising teachers and students from both colleges and the police would be formed to resolve any disputes among the students in future.

Dhaka College principal AKM Elius, Ideal College acting principal Muhammad Rezwanul Haque, and faculty members from both colleges also attended the ceremony.

On September 10, 2024, a section of students of Dhaka College and a group of Ideal College locked in a clash in the Science Laboratory area in the capital, leaving about 80 students and two teachers injured.

On August 21, at least 10 people, including police personnel and students, were injured after a section of the Dhaka College students and a group of the Dhaka City College students clashed in Science Laboratory area.
