Noor Hossain Day will be observed today commemorating the sacrifice of the young campaigner for democracy who was gunned down by police at Zero Point in the capital Dhaka on November 10, 1987.

A motor driver by profession, Noor Hossain caught the imagination of the nation with the slogans ‘Down with autocracy’ written on his bare chest and ‘Let democracy be free’ on his bare back.

He was taking part in a demonstration against the autocratic ruler Hussein Muhammad Ershad when the police shot him dead.

After his death, the Zero Point at Gulistan was renamed as Noor Hossain Square.

His death added a vigorous momentum to the movement for democracy which eventually turned into a popular uprising that led to the fall of Ershad on December 6, 1990.

Political parties and socio-cultural organisations have since been observing the day as Shaheed Noor Hossain Day.

Different political parties and socio-cultural organisations will place wreaths at the Noor Hossain Square in the morning and at his grave at Jurain in the city to mark the day.

The Nagorik Oikya will hold a discussion at the Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium at 11:00am on the occasion, which party president Mahmudur Rahman Manna will  chair.
