Experts at a conference in Dhaka on Sunday said that nearly 80 per cent of strokes were preventable through lifestyle changes.

They made the observation at the event titled International Stroke Conference at the Bangladesh Medical University, said a press release.


Mentioning that stroke is still the leading cause of death and disability in the country and most of it is preventable, they noted that it was essential to implement community-level interventions, focusing on controlling high blood pressure, avoiding smoking, eliminating unhealthy eating habits and combating physical inactivity.

They also opined that stroke prevention education must be integrated from schools to workplaces and even into urban planning.

A scientific session titled Transformation of Acute Stroke Care and Development of Next Generation Neurointervention services in BMU was also organised at the conference.

Organised by the BMU’s neurology department at Shaheed Dr Milon Hall, BMU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam was present as chief guest at the conference, which was presided over by BMU pro-VC, administration, Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad.

Professor Shahinul Alam said that the conference would open new horizons in the field of stroke treatment management. ‘With the help of foreign experts, the latest treatment of stroke will be ensured at BMU.’

‘The presence of foreign experts in today’s international conference will make a great contribution to the country’s improved stroke treatment,’ he added.

BMU pro-VC, research and development, Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader, treasurer Professor Dr Nahrin Akhtar, dean of the faculty of medicine Professor Dr Shamim Ahmed, registrar Nazrul Islam, director of NINSH Professor Dr Kazi Gias Uddin Ahmed, medical education director of BHRUT Professor Gideon Malwa attended the conference as special guests.

Chairperson of the department of neurology Professor Dr Md Bahadur Ali Mia delivered welcome speech at the event.
