The department of English of the American International University–Bangladesh in collaboration with the TESOL Society of Bangladesh organised an event titled Discover English 2025: Student Conference on English Language and Literature at the AIUB in Dhaka on Saturday.
With the motto ‘a conference by the students and for the students’, the conference received response from the English language and literature’s undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD-levels student, said a press release.
The event opened with the welcome speech of associate professor M Hamidul Haque, head of the English department of AIUB and president of the TESOL Society of Bangladesh; and Professor Sayeedur Rahman, adviser, TESOL Society of Bangladesh, who shared his insights on the significance of student-led conferences in advancing research and collaboration.
Munia Jaman, MA student of the department of English, AIUB and convenor of Discover English 2025, expressed her gratitude to the participants and organisers for their support and enthusiasm.
The keynote speech was delivered by Mohammad Mosiur Rahman, PhD candidate at the department of English and communication, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
His keynote titled Trends in Applied Linguistics and TESOL Research: Orientations, Frameworks and Methodological Diversity explored emerging directions in global linguistic and pedagogical research.
AIUB vice-chancellor Professor Saiful Islam attended as chief while pro-VC Professor Md Abdur Rahman attended as special guest at the occasion.
Professor Tazul Islam, dean of the faculty of arts and social sciences, AIUB, addressed the audience and encouraged the students to continue their scholarly pursuits.
Eight papers were awarded special mention in the categories of graduate language and literature in recognition of their outstanding student research.
The conference ended with a cultural segment organised by the students of AIUB.
