Cultural activists on Sunday issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government to reinstate the posts of music teachers and physical training instructors at primary schools across the country.

They gave the ultimatum at a rally in front of YMCA Bangladesh in the capital’s Segunbagicha area, where the police intercepted a musical march from Topkhana Road to the chief adviser’s official residence Jamuna in the capital.

Bangladesh Udichi Shipligoshthi brought out the march demanding the reinstatement of the posts of music teachers and physical training instructors at primary schools.

Speakers at the rally said that the nation dreamt for an inclusive and democratic country after the student-led mass uprising, but the government’s decision of cancelling the posts was a fascist approach.

Addressing the rally, Udichi acting president Habibul Alam said that, through the government decision, it was clear that the government was implementing the agenda of fundamentalist groups.

He warned that they would organise a nationwide movement if the government failed to reconsider its decision.

Udichi general secretary Jamshed Anwar Topon, Samaj Chinta Forum convener Kamal Hossain Badal and Charon Sanskritic Kendra general secretary Zakir Hossain also spoke.

The rally ended with rap songs addressing contemporary political issues and the government’s failure to stabilise the law and order situation after the mass uprising.

At the outset of the procession, Udichi assistant general secretary Rahman Mafiz said that the chief advisor had earlier said that the nation had entered in a civilized era after the mass uprising.

He wanted to know how a civilized nation can cancel the posts of music teachers and physical training instructors at the primary level.

The government, in a notification on November 2, scrapped the positions of music teacher and physical training instructors at primary schools by changing the Government Primary School Teacher Recruitment Rules 2025 in the wake of criticism by Islamist groups.

The government, on August 28, issued a notification introducing the positions of two assistant teachers — one for music and the other for physical training.

Since the cancellation of the posts, different political and socio-cultural organisations have held protests against the decision.
