Bangladesh’s Marjia Akter Ekra gave her country the first medal in the sixth Islamic Solidarity Games when she clinched bronze in the women's 53kg weight category in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
Ekra lifted a total of 163 kg – 72kg in snatch and 91kg in clean and jerk – to finish third among the eight participants in this event .
Turkey’s Cansel Ozkan won gold by lifting a total of 188kg while Indonesia’s Basilia Bamerop Ninggan bagged silver by lifting a total of 174kg.
The other two Bangladeshi weightlifters, Bristy finished fifth among eight participants in the women’s 48kg weight category by lifting a total of 139 kg (snatch 64kg, clean and jerk 75kg) while Ashikur Rahman Taj also finished fifth in the men's 60kg weight category among eight competitors by lifting a total of 221kg (snatch 101kg, clean and jerk 120kg).Â
Bangladesh’s 17 male and 19 female athletes are featuring in 10 disciplines – athletics, fencing, karate, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, wushu, judo, and taekwondo – in the multi-sport competition.
About 3,000 athletes from 57 countries are featuring in 23 disciplines in the mega sport events of the Islamic world from November 7 to 21.
