Teachers held a rally on the premises of Natuarpara Degree College at Kazipur in Sirajganj on Saturday demanding establishment of Jamuna upazila.
Teachers from six eastern unions of Kazipur upazila — Natuarpara, Tekani, Khasrajbari, Nishchintapur, Char Girish and Monsurnagar — joined the rally organised by the Jamuna Upazila Implementation Council.
For a long time, residents of the char areas on the eastern bank of the Jamuna River at Kazipur have been demanding the establishment of a new administrative unit named Jamuna upazila.
Char areas across the Jamuna have long been geographically isolated from the mainland and about two lakh people have been deprived of access to education, healthcare, communication, and administrative services for decades, speakers told the rally.
They expressed hope that forming a new upazila would reduce this inequality and improve the socio-economic conditions of the region.
Presided over by Natuarpara Degree College principal Abdus Salam, the rally was addressed, among others by Jamuna Upazila Implementation Council leaders former chairman Abdul Kader, Faridul Islam, Suman Mia and Saifullah Al Galib, teachers Rafiqul Islam, Rezaul Karim, Fazlul Haque Sarkar, Saifur Rahman, Laili Begum, Razia Sultana and Abdullah Hel Baki.
The rally was followed by a procession.
