Cultural activists on Saturday urged the government to include more creative subjects, including sports and performance arts, at the primary level to build a creative nation.

They also said that the government’s decision of cancelling the posts of music teachers and physical training instructors at primary schools was a political decision and urged the government to reinstate the posts.

They made the demands at a musical march organised by Samageet in the capital, demanding the reinstatement of posts for music teachers and physical training instructors at primary schools.

The march began from the Central Shaheed Minar and met in a short rally at Shaheed Noor Hossain Chattar at Gulistan.

Addressing the rally, singer Kazi Krishnokoli Islam said that Gurusaday Dutt initiated the Bratachari movement, aiming at the simultaneous development of physical, moral and spiritual culture in the younger generation for the anti-British movement.

‘We need more creative subjects for our children to inspire them to grow globally,’ she said.

Singer Farzana Wahid Shayan termed the government’s decision to scrap the posts of music teachers and physical training instructors a ‘political decision’ and said that the interim government should not take any such decision.

Samageet member Amal Akash, addressing the rally as the chair, criticised the government for not investing in the education sector. ‘It is not appropriate in a democratic country.’

Moderated by Bithi Ghosh, the rally was attended, among others, by filmmaker Akram Khan and photographer Amirul Rajiv.

Cultural organisation Chhayanaut also organised a musical event urging the government to reconsider its decision to cancel posts for music teachers and physical training instructors at the primary level.

They held the programme in front of their auditorium at Dhanmondi.

A faction of the Bangladesh Udichi Shipligoshthi at a press conference at the National Press Club on Saturday announced a 15-day nationwide programme over the issue.

Another faction of the cultural organization announced to organize a Gaaner Michil from Udichi central office on Topkhana Road to the chief adviser’s official residence Jamuna today.

The government, in a notification on November 2, scrapped the positions of music teacher and physical training instructors at primary schools by changing the Government Primary School Teacher Recruitment Rules 2025 in the wake of criticism by Islamist groups.

The government, on August 28, issued a notification introducing the positions of two assistant teachers — one for music and the other for physical training.

Since the cancellation of the posts, different political and socio-cultural organisations have held protests against the decision.
