Chattogram City Corporation on Friday evicted over 60 illegal shops and establishments and fined several individuals Tk 19,000 during a drive from Jamal Khan Khastgir School to Cheragi Pahar crossing in the port city.
The five-hour operation, which began at 10:00am, was led by CCC special magistrate Md Shoyeb Uddin Khan with assistance from police and officials of the corporation鈥檚 conservancy department.
Officials said that a large number of unauthorised shops had long occupied sidewalks and drains along the busy Jamal Khan-Cheragi Pahar stretch, severely obstructing pedestrian movement.
To restore public access, the city corporation removed the illegal structures and fined seven shop owners Tk 19,000 for blocking footpaths with their merchandise.
Magistrate Shoyeb Uddin Khan said that similar drives would continue across the city to maintain order and ensure smooth movement for residents.
