The Indian Army has expanded its presence along the Bangladesh frontier by setting up a new base in North Dinajpur district of West Bengal and initiating another in Assam’s Dhubri district, reports deccanchronicle.com.

According to the report, published online on Friday, officials said that the move aimed to strengthen defence preparedness and improve infrastructure along the eastern border amid recent political developments in Bangladesh.

The report reads that Eastern Army Commander Lieutenant General RC Tiwari on November 6 visited the base at Chopra in North Dinajpur, close to the India-Bangladesh border.

Referring to a post on ‘X’ by the Eastern Command of India, the report said that Lt Gen RC Tiwari visited the troops deployed at Chopra.

During the visit, Tiwari also met local lawmaker Hamidul Rahaman and civil leaders, underscoring the importance of cooperation between the military and civilian authorities in ensuring regional stability, said the report.

He later travelled to Assam to lay the foundation stone for the Lachit Borphukan Military Station at Bamunigaon in Dhubri.

The new installation is expected to enhance the army’s logistical and operational capacity in the northeastern border region, the report said.

The Eastern Command said that the establishment of these bases marked a significant step in reinforcing India’s defence infrastructure and response capabilities along the Bangladesh border, the report mentioned.

Earlier, the Indian Air Force issued a ‘notice to airmen’ covering the entire north-eastern region bordering Bangladesh, Bhutan, China and Myanmar for a series of large-scale exercises beginning on November 6, reported The Shillong Times, a newspaper based in India’s northeast state of Meghalaya.
