The supporters of Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s nomination seeker for Satkhira-3, Shahidul Alam, on Thursday staged a demonstration in Satkhira’s Kaliganj upazila, urging the party to change the party nomination for the constituency.

The party on November 3 announced its preliminary selection of candidates for 237 constituencies, including Kazi Alauddin for Satkhira-3 constituency, for the upcoming national polls, expected to be held in the first half of February next year.

A tense situation occurred in Kaliganj Thursday afternoon when ‘deprived’ Shahidul’s supporters staged a demonstration and Alauddin’s supporters staged a programme in favour of the party nominee.

BNP leaders, activists and supporters of Shahidul brought out a procession carrying black flags from the upazila BNP office, marched the main roads of the upazila town, and met in a rally at the North Kaliganj Bus Terminal demanding nomination for Shahidul by cancelling the nomination of Alauddin.

The supporters of Alauddin, on the other hand, brought out their pre-announced mass procession from Kaliganj Government College intersection, which met in a rally at the Phultala intersection in Kaliganj.

Shahidul’s supporters threatened that they would besiege the party chairperson’s office in the capital’s Gulshan area if their demand was not met.

Vehicular movement on the Satkhira-Kaliganj-Shyamnagar highway disrupted due to the demonstrations.

Kaliganj police station sub-inspector (investigation) Aslam Khan said that the army seized sticks, slingshots and brick bats from the participants of the black flag procession and picked up four persons from there.

Supporters of several nomination aspirants staged demonstrations demanding that the party reconsider the selections in their respective constituencies since the BNP’s announcement of its preliminary selected candidates.
