The 50th anniversary of the ‘civil-military uprising’ of November 7, 1975 will be observed across the country today.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party will observe the day as ‘national revolution and solidarity day’ while the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal factions will observe the day as ‘civil-military uprising day’.
On this day in 1975, amid political turmoil, soldiers and civilians jointly overthrew the government and freed the then chief of army staff, Ziaur Rahman, from captivity at Dhaka Cantonment, paving the way for him to assume state power.
On November 2, BNPÂ announced a 10-day programme between November 5 and November 13 to mark the day.
As part of the observance, the party flag will be hoisted at 6:00am on November 7 at the BNP central Office in Naya Paltan and at all BNP offices nationwide.
Senior leaders and activists will pay tribute and recite Fateha at the grave of the former president, Ziaur Rahman, at 10:00am on the day.
A central rally will be organised in front of the BNP central office in the capital’s Naya Paltan area at 3:00pm, and similar rallies will be held by BNP units across districts and upazilas.
The party’s front and affiliated organisations will also hold various events, including discussion meetings by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on November 8 alongside a photo exhibition at the TSC on November 7 and November 8, Jatiyatabadi Ulama Dal distributing educational materials to orphans on November 9, Jatiyatabadi Tanti Dal on November 10, Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal on November 11, and a cultural programme by JASAS at Shaheed Minar on November 13.Â
A central discussion programme will take place on November 12 at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
In addition, documentaries and images will be published from November 6 to November 13 through electronic and print media, as well as on social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube.
BNP will also release posters and commemorative publications to mark the day.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD will hold a discussion meeting today at its central office at Gulistan in Dhaka at 4:00 pm to mark Sipoy Janatar Obhyutthan Dibos.
Central leaders of the party will speak at the discussion, a party press release said.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-Jasod will also hold a discussion meeting at Colonel Taher auditorium at 11:00am to mark the day.
