Attorney general Md Asaduzzaman on Wednesday said that he would contest the coming national election from Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency.

He also said that he would resign from his post to contest the election.

‘I have sought nomination from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party for Jhenaidah-1,’ he said adding that he would resign from the attorney general post ‘at the right time’.

Asaduzzaman revealed the information while he was speaking to journalists at his office after a court hearing.

He said he was hopeful about securing the BNP nomination.

The attorney general on the day presented his arguments before the Appellate Division, led by chief justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, in several appeals seeking the restoration of the non-party caretaker government system.

The Awami League government scrapped the caretaker government system in 2011 following an Appellate Division verdict.

The court adjourned the hearing until Thursday morning.

Md Asaduzzaman, a senior Supreme Court lawyer, was appointed attorney general on August 8, 2024, through a presidential order issued under Article 64(1) of the constitution.

The post of attorney general fell vacant after AM Amin Uddin resigned citing his difficulties, two days after the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime was deposed on August 5, 2024 in the face of a student-led mass uprising.
