Monirul Islam’s fifth solo exhibition of artworks influenced by his surroundings, time, and nature is under way at the Priyo Bangla Art Gallery in Banglamotor, Dhaka.
An eight-day exhibition showcasing his recent collection of 70 artworks, which includes seven sculptures, commenced on November 1.
In his artworks, which primarily consist of paintings and prints, the artist conveys personal feelings and experiences using diverse organic and hybrid forms rendered in muted, faded colours.
His series titled Image created on acrylic on paper addressed contemporary political reality and the struggle of low income people to survive in a capitalist world.
Vumiputro, a series of prints displayed national minority peoples’ struggle as they also live a marginal life in both socio-cultural and political landscape of the country.
Circus is an on-going series of watercolour and acrylic paintings on paper that explores themes of state extremism, urban decay, global warming, power of the majority, and political monopolies through figures and symbols.
His naturalistic series, titled The Seed, used projections of vegetable, fruit, and crop seeds to emphasize the importance of firming.
Sculptures crafted from tree branches depicted both organic forms and figures of animals and birds, conveying a message about the importance of environmental conservation.
‘My inspirations are firstly nature, then our society and then root level people and their daily lives which suffer from the socio-political conditions’, Monirul said.
‘My semi abstract artworks reflect the image of our social realism,’ he said, adding that his recent works amplify the idea of saving nature.Â
The exhibition will end on Friday.
