Twenty-three business establishments were gutted in a fire at Mahalchari Bazar in Khagrachari early Wednesday.
The fire broke out in the main market around 12.30am from a shop and soon engulfed the adjacent shops.
Fire Service deputy director Zaker Hossain said that the fire was brought under control after five hours of efforts.
Two units of the fire service went to the spot and brought the fire under control with the help of rainwater.
Later, with the help of people of the area, Bangladesh Army and fire service members were able to completely extinguish the fire.
The fire was completely controlled around 5:00am.
However, 23 shops were burnt, included shoe shops, food hotels, cosmetics, clothes, grocery and gold shops.
Traders of the market claimed that the fire caused damage worth Tk 4 to 5 crore.
The extent of the damage, however, has not been determined yet.
