The police have arrested the prime accused in the killing of two children who were burnt to death in a house fire in Feni, following a 25-month-long investigation.

Superintendent of police Md Habibur Rahman disclosed the information at a press conference on Wednesday.

He said that on October 5, 2023, some individuals set fire to the house of Shahidul Islam at night over a property dispute and previous enmity at Pachi Fakir Bari in the Birinchi area.

Shahidul Islam’s two children – 13-year-old Mahidul Islam Shahadat and 6-year-old Tanjidul Islam Golap – were burnt to death in the incident.

Later, Shahidul Islam filed a case against 13 people over the incident.

‘During the investigation, several accused involved in the incident were arrested,’ the SP said, adding that considering the importance of the case, the investigation was handed over to Detective Branch.

The prime accused, Kamal Hossain Jony, however, fled after the incident. To evade arrest, Jony used the pseudonym ‘Kasim’ and lived in hiding in various districts of the country, including Chattogram, Cumilla, Dhaka, Habiganj and Kishoreganj, mentioned the SP.

He added that the accused did not use any SIM card or mobile phone registered in his own name. ‘After a three-day raid, the DB team arrested him at Madarbari under Sadarghat in Chattogram on November 4.’

During primary interrogation, SP Habibur said that Jony provided sensational information about the incident.

According to Jony’s statement to the police, he was present at the scene on the night of the incident, while three other accomplices set fire to the house around 1:00am.

Jony has been sent to jail through the court.
