High Court Division Judge Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar was removed from office on Wednesday following an inquiry by the Supreme Judicial Council into allegations of misconduct.

A notification from the law ministry, signed by Law and Justice Division secretary Liakat Ali Molla, stated that the President removed Justice Khurshid Alam Sarkar under the restored Article 96(6) of the constitution, declaring him disqualified to perform judicial duties.

Justice Khurshid Alam becomes the ninth judge to be removed, resign, or not retained following SJC investigations.

He was among 12 judges temporarily barred from judicial duties by chief justice Syed Refaat Ahmed on 21 October 2024, amid student-led protests demanding action against alleged judicial bias.

Three other judges — Justice Naima Haider, Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif, and Justice SM Maniruzzaman — remain under review by the SJC.

Earlier, Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman, Justice Khizir Hayat, and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman were removed; Justice Shahed Nuruddin, Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque resigned; and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das retired during the inquiry.

The services of Justice SM Maud Hossain Dolan and Justice Md Aminul Islam were not regularised by the interim government.
