The Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday decided to run a DNA test on Nachol upazila nirbahi officer Kamal Hossain who allegedly named his uncle as his father in documents to secure a government job under the freedom fighter quota facility.
The commission also approved the filing of a case against Nurjahan Begum, wife of former Awami League lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari, on charges of acquiring illegal wealth.
ACC director general (prevention) Akhtar Hossain said that the commission’s investigation officer would conduct the DNA test on UNO Kamal and his biological parents as well as his uncle and aunt through taking a court order to confirm his true parentage.
He said, ‘Kamal Hossain deceived the spirit of the Liberation War by showing his paternal uncle and aunt as his parents to get admission and employment under the freedom fighter quota at university.’
Through this ‘false’ identity, he participated in the 35th BCS examination and was appointed to the administration cadre as a child of a freedom fighter, he said.
The ACC filed a case against him on December 26, 2024, when Kamal was serving as UNO of Atrai in Naogaon.
He is currently the UNO of Nachol upazila in Chapai Nawabganj district and his ancestral home is at Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia.
Regarding the DNA test, Akhtar said that during the probe, the investigating officer applied for DNA testing to determine the identity of the real parents.
The ACC, after reviewing the application, decided to conduct DNA tests on the accused Kamal Hossain, his biological parents, and his uncle and aunt, subject to court approval.
According to the case statement, Kamal’s biological father is Abul Kashem and his mother is Habiya Khatun. However, in official documents, he showed his uncle, freedom fighter Ahsan Habib, and aunt, Sanoara Khatun, as his parents to avail various benefits under the freedom fighter quota.
Kamal used the names of his uncle and aunt as his parents in all his certificates from secondary school certificate, higher secondary school to higher education.
He also inserted their names in his birth certificate and national identity card.
He committed this fraud to gain admission to university, secure a job, and receive other benefits, said the case statement.
Kamal had registered his uncle as his father and aunt as his mother since he was a student of class nine, and step by step, through such forgery, he appeared in the 35th BCS examination and obtained a position in the administration cadre, it added.
The ACC on Tuesday also decided to file a case against Nurjahan Begum, wife of former AL lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari, on charges of acquiring illegal wealth.
According to the ACC’s findings, Nurjahan Begum declared assets worth Tk 53.63 crore in her wealth statement submitted to the commission.
However, after calculating household expenditures and other financial details, the ACC found evidence of allegedly amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 45.34 crore.
The commission also found suspicious transactions of Tk 43.31 crore in a First Security Islami Bank account under her name between May 2019 and August 2024.
After the fall of the AL regime on August 5, 2024, in a mass uprising, the ACC began investigating allegations of corruption against Nizam Hazari and his wife.
Earlier, the commission filed several cases against Nizam Uddin Hazari over various allegations of corruption.
