At least six people were injured in a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party at Jhenaidah sadar upazila on Monday over establishing supremacy in the locality.

The clash happened at Kolamankhali village of Dogachi union, leaving Bisarat Jowadder, 68, Hasem Jowadder, 70, Suruj Munshi, 25, Yalik Rajab Munshi, 45, Naim Jowadder, and Golam Rasul, 60.


Quoting local people, Jheanaidah police officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun said that the clash was the consequence of a longstanding rivalry between the supporters of two local BNP leaders, Nayeem Jowadder and Asadur Rahman, over dominance in the area.

The two groups swooped on each other with sticks and sharp weapons, leaving the six men from both groups injured, the police official said.

Locals later took the injured to Jhenaidah General Hospital. On information, a police team went to the spot and brought the situation under control, the OC said.

Additional police personnel were deployed in the area, he said, adding that legal action would be taken against those found involved in the incident if complaint filed.

Contacted, both Nayeem Jowadder of Sadar Thana Jubo Dal and Asadur Rahman, vice president of the Jhenaidah district BNP denied responsibility and traded blame for the attack.
