Bangla Academy director general Mohammad Azam on Sunday said that the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2026 would be held after the national election slated for the first half of February 2026.

He said that the Academy was cooperating with all stakeholders of the fair, including the government.

He also said that the timetable would be planned once the government announced the national election schedule, according to a press release.

His remarks came after a meeting with representatives of the Bangladesh Publishers and Booksellers’ Association at the Academy on Sunday evening.

The meeting discussed issues regarding the fair.

Earlier, on September 18, the Academy announced that the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2026 would be held from December 17, 2025 to January 17, 2026 due to the forthcoming national election and Ramadan, the month of fasting of the Muslims.

On September 21, the committee of the advisory council on law and order at a meeting at the secretariat decided to request the cultural affairs ministry to organise the book fair after the national election due to security concerns ahead of the polls.

Following the request, Bangla Academy postponed the fair.

On October 26, Bangladesh interim government chief adviser’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam said that the Amar Ekushey Book Fair 2026 would be held in February with some adjustments to the schedule due to the national election slated for the first half of the month.

Bangla Academy is the organiser of the month-long event which usually begins on the first day of February.
