A discussion titled Evidence-based Precision Oncology: Integration of Education, Research and Clinical Practice was held at the department of clinical oncology of Bangladesh Medical University in Dhaka on Saturday.

The discussion highlighted the future of precision oncology, AI-based cancer treatment, modern training system and the importance of research-based treatment, said a press release.


BMU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam was present as chief guest at the discussion.

He said that Tk 38 crore had been allocated for the purchase of AI-based state-of-the-art radiotherapy machines in the oncology department.

‘More allocation will be made if necessary. A Cancer Research and Treatment Institute will be established at BMU, so that patients can get modern services and students can get international quality education and training,’ he added and mentioned, ‘A memorandum of will be signed with the National Cancer Center Singapore in this regard soon.’

The programme was moderated by Professor Dr Syed Md Akram Hossain, chairperson of the department of clinical oncology, Bangladesh Medical University.

Professor Dr Han Chong Toh, deputy CEO, strategic partnerships, National Cancer Centre Singapore, was present as special guests at the programme.

He discussed the progress of precision oncology in the international arena and the potential for high-quality cancer treatment and research in Bangladesh.

MDs and FCPS residents of the Department of Oncology shared their curricula and presented case presentations at the programme.

Dr Mahmud Hasan presented on the topic of ‘AI in Radiotherapy Contouring’ at the programme.
