A Japanese researcher team paid a courtesy call on Chittagong University vice-chancellor Professor Muhammad Yeahia Akhter at the office of the VC in Chattogram on Thursday.
Professor Keisaku Higashida, school of economics, Kwansei Gakuin University, Hyogo; and associate professor Yuki Higuchi, faculty of economics, Sophia University, Tokyo, paid the call, said a press release.
During the meeting, they exchanged views on further strengthening research and academic cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan.
The possibilities of expanding cooperation in the areas of teacher and student exchange, joint research and environmental and forest resource management between the universities of the two countries were discussed at the meeting.
Professor Yeahia Akhter said that they were working to increase research capacity and increase interest in research work, highlighting various aspects of the university.
Expressing interest in jointly conducting research work, the VC said, ‘Our thoughts are in the interest of the students.’
The guests visited various educational and research institutions of the university, including the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences.
The visit was being held as part of a three-year joint research project titled Enhancing the Conservation Capacity of Forest Management through Competition and Cooperation, funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency.
The research focuses on the conservation and sustainable management of Village Common Forests in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
The main objective of the project is to increase forest conservation and water security with the participation of the local community and in this initiative, students of Chittagong University will participate in collecting data at the field level.
The visit was coordinated by Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain, director of CU Institutional Quality Assurance Cell and professor of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences.
