Millers for Nutrition Coalition powered by TechnoServe organised a two-day intensive training on Food Safety Management System (FSMS), Quality Control, and Quality Assurance for Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK) production from October 28-29 at Hotel Windy Terrace, Cox’s Bazar, says a press release.

The training emphasised practical applications, enabling participants to identify food safety hazards, implement control measures, and align production processes with international certification requirements. Representatives from 13 FRK factories attended, strengthening their capacity to produce high-quality fortified rice that meets national and global fortification standards.

Welcome speeches were delivered by Md. Guljer Ahmmed, Country Programme Manager, TechnoServe; Mr. Muhammad Nazmul Alam, Country Manager, DSM-Firmenich; Dr. Mohammad Mahbobor Rahman, Programme Policy Officer, WFP; and Engr. Md. Akib Abrar, Programme Officer, Nutrition International. They highlighted the importance of robust food safety management systems for sustainable industry growth.

Md. Jamal Hossain, Additional Director General, Directorate General of Food (DG Food), attended as Chief Guest. He emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to the rice fortification programme and expressed expectations for a consistent supply of high-quality fortified rice kernels from FRK producers. He also commended TechnoServe’s continued efforts in strengthening Bangladesh’s food fortification ecosystem.

The technical sessions, led by Md. Nayem Zobayer, Senior Food Fortification Specialist, and Md. Mahade Hassan, Food Safety Management System Consultant, both from TechnoServe, covered critical components of food safety and quality management, including FSSC 22000 standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP), Operational Prerequisite Programs (OPRP), hygiene management, emergency preparedness, and internal audit procedures.

The event concluded with commitments from TechnoServe and its partners—WFP, NI, and DSM-Firmenich—to continue supporting FRK producers in enhancing food safety and nutrition outcomes nationwide. Participants gained extensive knowledge on FSSC certification and documentation systems, which will help them produce and supply high-quality FRK under the rice fortification programme.
