The Drama Club of the department of English at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology has recently earned the runner-up position at the 11th DHE Inter-University Student Conference and Cultural Competition 2025 at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.

The play, titled ‘What is Beauty and Who is the Beast?, challenged the conventional notions of beauty, goodness and identity through humour, symbolism and moments of deep emotion, said a press release on Monday.

Drawing inspiration from classical literature and contemporary social realities, the performance blended artistic imagination with a strong moral message.

‘It’s not just a play — it’s a reflection on how we see ourselves and others,’ said Md Shahrear Talukder, associate professor and head of the department of English, who guided and accompanied the team.

‘Our students showed that theatre can question, heal, and enlighten,’ he added.

The cast — Sadikul Islam, Tasmia Hassan, Naima Benjir Bonna, Anshil Azim Afridi, Bony Amin Niloy, Nawrin Nusrat Naina, Sayeda Rumman Jahan Nishi, Premananda Debnath, Suraiya Mim, and Saif Uddin Ahmmed Antu — earned praise for their nuanced acting and expressive teamwork.

Their dynamic performance combined movement, dialogue and emotion in a seamless flow that impressed both judges and fellow participants from across the country.

For the students, the achievement marks more than just a trophy. ‘It was a dream to represent our university on such a big stage,’ said cast member Tasmia Hassan.

‘We learned how powerful storytelling can be when everyone believes in the same vision,’ she added.

Vice-chancellor of the university Professor Md Shah-E-Alam congratulated the team, calling the victory ‘a testament to the creative and intellectual potential of SMUCT’s students’.

Professor Sayed Azizul Huq, dean of the faculty of humanities and social sciences, said, ‘The department of English has consistently demonstrated excellence not only in academics but also in the cultural and creative domains.’
