A pedestrian was killed as a bearing pad crashed on him from metro rail line in Dhaka’s Farmgate area on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased is identified as Abul Kalam, 35, a resident of Shariatpur, Tejgaon police station officer-in-charge Md Mobarak confirmed.
Dhaka Mass Transport Company Limited managing director Md Faruque Ahmed said that the accident took place at about 12:30pm.
The metro rail services remained halted since then.
The DMTCL managing director said that they did not know when the metro rail services would resume.
‘A bearing pad placed between the pier and viaduct fell on the road near Farmgate station,’ he said.
He also said that two people were injured in the incident.
He came to the spot at about 2:00pm.
Champa Akhter, an eye witness said, that they heard a sound as something fell from the line.
The substance (bearing pad) jumped on the street and hit the man’s neck, she told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
The victim fell on the footpath immediately and blood come out from his nose and mouth, she said.
‘He got silent within seconds,’ she added.
Later, the pad hit a nearby shop, she said.
The shopkeeper named Amir also sustained injury and he was taking treatment at a hospital, she added.
Earlier on September 18, 2024, another bearing pad fell on the road at the same station.
