At least eight people were killed and 14 others injured in road accidents in five districts—Jhalakati, Naogaon, Lalmonirhat, Dhaka and Faridpur—from Friday night to Saturday.
In Jhalakati, Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s former general secretary for Rajapur upazila unit Nasim Uddin Akon was killed and another person was injured in a road accident in the upazila on Saturday afternoon, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Barishal.
According to the police and local people, the accident occurred in Nalbunia Bazar area when a bus hit Nasim’s motorcycle when he was going to a construction site, leaving the motorcycle rider and Nasim seriously injured.
Locals rescued them and took them to Rajapur Upazila Health Complex, from where Nasim was referred to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Rajapur police officer-in-charge Ismail Hossain said, ‘We are working to identify the bus and take legal action.’
In Naogaon district, two men were killed and seven others injured when a shallow-engine-run human hauler overturned and plunged into a ditch on the Biharinagar Bypass in Dhamoirhat upazila on Saturday, reported United News of Bangladesh.
The deceased were identified as cattle trader Bhuttu Hossain, 45, and the driver Masudur Rahman Maula, 30.
Quoting locals, Dhamoirhat police officer-in-charge Imam Zafar said that the accident occurred around 7:30am, leaving the two men dead on the spot.
The injured were taken to Dhamoirhat Upazila Health Complex.
In Lalmonirhat district, another two men were killed and a woman was injured when an auto-rickshaw carrying them overturned in Aditmari upazila on Saturday, also reported by UNB.
The deceased were identified as Bakul Mia, 58, and Atiqul Islam Atiq, 34.
The accident left Atiq dead on the spot, while Bakul succumbed to his injuries on the way to Aditmari Upazila Health Complex, said Aditmari police OC Ali Akbar.
In Dhaka city, an unidentified woman, 30, was killed after being hit by a vehicle while crossing road in front of the High Court building early Saturday, reported UNB.
On information the police rushed to the spot and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where physicians declared her dead around 2:30am, said Shahbagh police sub-inspector Hamidul Islam, adding that the body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
In Faridpur, two men were killed and five others injured when a truck hit a van at Mujurdia in Boalmari upazila on Friday night, reported UNB.
The deceased were identified as Biplab Kumar Saha, 55, and Narayan Chandra Saha, 50, of the upazila.
Boalmari police inspector (investigation) Al Amin Hossain confirmed the incident.
